Portland Memory Garden

The Portland Memory Garden was Established as a garden designed for those dealing with Alzheimer’s. Essentially a sensory garden, the Portland Memory Garden includes specific plants and paving laid out to support the reduced sensory abilities of those with dementia, as well as elements that may stimulate pleasant memories. The entrance to the Portland Memory Garden is meant to provide a recognizable feature so users of the garden understand how to get in and out of the space. The garden is fully enclosed by a decorative fence to keep those with dementia from wandering off. The garden has a restroom and drinking fountain. There is also ample shade and seating and a covered pavilion and a small shade pavilion with a picnic table.

Must See Highlights: The garden features many examples of how to provide access to nature for the widest range of physical and cognitive abilities . A central seating area provides a place for group gathering and events at the garden. Free Horticultural Therapy activities are available to attend throughout the summer.

Volunteer Opportunities:
The garden is maintained by volunteers coordinated by the Friends of the Portland Memory Garden a 501c3. Gardeners maintain the plant collection and maintain the garden in good condition for visitors in all season and all types of weather.
