This guide is your passport to the Portland area’s world-class collection of public gardens
McMenamins Kennedy School
5736 NE 33rd Ave., Portland, OR 97211
Tucked into the inner suburbs of NE Portland, this Italian Renaissance-styled complex was designed and built as an elementary school. It lived as such and grew with numerous additions for its first 65 years. The building took a breather for the next 17 years, and, then, in 1997, began anew as a different kind of community gathering spot. It contains a movie theater, restaurant, 4 themed bars, brewery, soaking pool, event spaces, courtyards, a gift shop, lavish and lush gardens, and hotel lodging.
Date Established: 1997
How Many Acres: 4
Must See Highlights: The grounds are, effectively, a botanical garden featuring a breathtaking diversity of garden plants growing in a myriad of micro-climates. The property is decorated with eclectic artwork, gas torch sculpture, a tile mosaic pool, unique interior lighting, and many one-of-a-kind collectables.
