The Portland Parks Foundation is bringing Portland’s parks communities together on October 12, 2023 for our annual Fall Friends & Allies Summit. Come network, learn from each other, and dive deeper together into creating more equitable access to nature, more inclusive places of work and play, and more sustainable non-profit teams and operations.
The Summit is free and open to the public.
Fall Summit Schedule
10:30 - 11:00 AM (Optional) Morning Meditation Session - FULL, no more spots left at this time. (The Parsons Room)
Facilitator: Touk Keo
Begin your day with slowing down your breath and taking the time to put in your intention for yourself and the event. Build up your capacity with a few skills to support your ability to recognize your emotions, regulate your emotions if needed, and to rest. This is space intended for everyone with the only expectation to show up.
11:00 - 11:30 AM Doors Open: Gather and Ground (Gymnasium)
Get situated in the space, reconnect with colleagues and partners, get caffeinated.
11:30 - 12:00 PM Program Opening (Gymnasium)
Our Summit emcee, JR Lilly, will welcome us in.
12:00 - 1:00 PM Keynote Speaker: Marina Martinez-Bateman (Gymnasium)
Marina Martinez-Bateman from New Coyote Consulting will share their own experience of nonprofit burnout and challenge attendees to rethink their organizational systems and address the common need for toxic productivity in small nonprofits. Marina will inspire us to focus on our values and community needs, placing them at the center of our work.
1:00 - 2:00 PM Let’s Lunch! Nosh and Network (Gymnasium)
2:00 - 5:00 PM Workshops (Various Locations)
Attendees are invited to choose one of four workshops. These 3-hour sessions are meant to give participants perspective, a chance to develop practical tools, and devoted time to work on their pressing growth edges.
Creating a Culture of Care in your Organization (Gymnasium)

Taking action and creating systems to combat burnout, turnover, and perpetuated trauma, and caring for your team as a whole, and as whole individuals.
Accessibility: If You Build It, Will They Come? (The Jordan Room)
Facilitator: Will Cortez & Laura Lepley, Metro Parks & Nature
Bringing an intersectional accessibility lens on parks and nature. Over the course of this workshop, we'll familiarize ourselves with accessibility standards with a focus on where they are confusing, vague and maybe even missing.Non-Profit Operations & Finances (The Parsons Room)
Facilitators: Michael Jonas & Chris Aiosa, Narwhal Consulting
Getting a better handle on non-profit finances including budgeting cycles, tracking income and expenses, reviewing and presenting financial reports.Youth Engagement: Creating LGBTQIA2S+ Affirming and Equitable Spaces (The Library)
Facilitator: V Rosales, Bridge 13 at New Avenues for Youth
Supporting LGBTQIA2S+ youth is an important part of creating welcoming and inclusive spaces. Join Bridge 13 to unpack gender and sexuality concepts with a focus on the gender binary, gender identity, and gender expression.
5:00 - 6:30 PM Happy Hour (Gymnasium)
Connect in person with your peers, debrief your learnings, and enjoy free food and beverages

Covid-19 Policies:
In accordance with McMenamins’ policies, Multnomah County, Oregon State, and CDC guidelines, people are not required to wear a mask at the Summit. However, in order to honor the variety of human experiences and to ensure that everyone feels safe and comfortable, we encourage mask wearing whenever requested, social distancing wherever appropriate and being respectful of boundaries around physical contact/touch. If you have symptoms of Covid, please consult with your doctor before venturing out. For more information about The Kennedy School’s Covid policies, please go here.
Accessibility:
The Kennedy School provides an ADA entrance from the parking lot and has 5 ADA parking spaces in front of that parking lot entrance. All of their public bathrooms include ADA stalls and all of the public spaces are wheel-chair accessible. Please see the attached map for additional information about the ADA entrance.
The Portland Parks Foundation provides ASL interpretation upon request.

Transportation & Parking:
A parking lot at the Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211), located off of NE Jessup Street, is available for free on a first come first serve basis. Street parking is also available. Bike racks and four racks for the orange Biketown bikes are available in the front of the building. For public transportation take the 70 or 72 to the nearest stop.
